Leonie Macks is looking to secure the Australian title as she faces Melina Yung on Saturday, September 17, 2016 in Sydney, NSW.

The Leonie Macks vs Melina Yung championship bout features on the card of Siam 2 Sydney fight night at Marsden High School, West Ryde, NSW.

Macks holds the lightweight Australian title, while Yung is the super featherweight champion of Queensland. With both ladies looking to be victorious, this bout is set to be an action packed battle. The two of the top contenders are going head to head.

“This is what we train for, to one day be the Australian champion in your weight division,” says Macks.

“It is one of the most sought after titles. I’m sure she [Yung] wants it as much as I do.”

While some believe muaythai to be an individual sport, many athletes have expressed that their trainer and at times team mates are right there in the ring with them.

Movies such as Fighting Tommy Riley (2004), Million Dollar Baby (2004) and Southpaw (2015) all reveal this irreplaceable bond between a fighter and their trainer. Your trainer impacts your life in and out of the ring.

Macks reiterates the latter as she ventured into the unknown in order to continue training under the tutelage of Airam Trujillo.

“I cannot say enough about the bond we have. He is one of the most important people in my life,” she says.

The bond between a trainer and fighter is unique. When talking about her trainer, boxer Lauren Eagle says “Billy has been very pivotal to my life as a mentor”.

Manny Pacquiao repeatedly acknowledges that Freddie Roach has been a father figure in his life.

Similarly Macks believes that while many have helped her during her fight career, her trainer deserves majority of the praise and thanks.

“He is always there through my ups and downs in training camps, and in everyday life.”

“The time, commitment and support he has given to my career is unquestionable.”

With Trujillo at her side Macks defeated Lucy Payne earlier this year. This was a rematch, leaving both contenders with a win. Macks expects the rematch to come. In addition, later this year Macks, Yung and Payne will face off in a 4-Woman tournament.
