Rico Verhoeven becomes GLORY kickboxing fighter of the year
Rico Verhoeven is proclaimed as the GLORY kickboxing Fighter of the Year 2016

Dutch heavyweight kickboxer Rico Verhoeven earned three victories in 2016.

In the press release made on Monday, the organization reveals that the fans voted Rico Verhoeven (50, 14 KOs – 10, 3 KOs – 1) into the number one spot in the “Fighter of the Year 2016”. He is a current champion in the promotion who retains the belt since 2014.

Verhoeven rides the six-fight winning streak. His last defeat was outside GLORY in 2015, when he went up against Andrey Gerasimchuk of Belarus at Kunlun Fight 15 in Nanjing.

Last year “The King of Kickboxing” defended his GLORY belt twice. In March he claimed a decision over Croatian Mladen Brestovac in Paris. In September earned the third round TKO victory over Brazilian Anderson Silva in New Jersey. However the bout against Moroccan Badri Hari in Oberhaussen is the one that brought attention from all over the World.

Rico Verhoeven and Badr Hari faced off in the main event of Glory: Collision on December 10, 2016 in Oberhaussen, Germany. A highly anticipated clash of the super heavyweights ended in the second round. Hari received an injury, a distended upper right forearm. As a result the referee stopped the contest. Consequently Verhoeven was proclaimed as the winner by way of TKO.

Post-fight both athletes showed the desire to square the differences in the rematch. In addition, the organization concludes that “Verhoeven can look back on the win as the crowning achievement of last year’s campaign as he prepares to defend his heavyweight title again this year.”
