John Wayne Parr makes a present to his opponent Nando Calzetta.
Australian muaythai fighter John Wayne Parr (95-32) is making his debut at the Bellator Kickboxing promotion. He squares off with Italian Nando Calzetta (45-9) tonight in Turin. The 72.5 kg bout features on the five-fight program. The event is held at the 18.500-seat Pala Alpitour sports arena.
The official weigh-in ceremony was conducted on Friday. It followed the press conference held the day before. On the scales Parr showed 72.7 kg (160.38 lbs). Calzetta was 70.2 kg (154.88 lbs).
When it got to the face-off photo on the stage… Instead of aggression, stare down and tense that is often seen in MMA and boxing, the Australian athlete smiled and handed his Italian opponent a little gift from the Land Down Under. The Boomerang.
The boomerang is commonly thought of as an Australian icon. Talking to fightmag.com.au from Turin, when asked what was behind the idea of the chosen item [why not Ugg boots when it’s cold in Europe], Parr laughed and said that “it’s because boomerangs are cool as f**k”.
“I even bought the one that comes back when you throw it. So it’s not just for show,” said Parr.
The 40-year-old John Wayne Parr traveled across the Planet. This is his second trip to Italy since 2004. He is in Turin since Sunday. When asked about his condition in general he said that “fighting in Europe always sucks.”
“They wanted me to arrive Tuesday, but I asked if I pay my own accommodation could I arrive Sunday. Australia is so far. 26 hours with two transits and Time zones are a nightmare.
Nevertheless, “The Gunslinger” is looking forward to appear inside the ring. The encounter with Calzetta is the 128th fight in his career.
“I feel great now though and body is on schedule. I have no excuse. I’ve made sure everything is in my favor.”
