Andre Ward stops Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round

American Andre Ward (32-0) faced off Sergey Kovalev (30-2-1) of Russia on Saturday live on HBO PPV. The bout headlined the boxing event held at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with a four-fight main card.

Ward and Kovalev have previously met, battling out on November 19 last year. The outcome of that contest saw American fighter taking a very close unanimous decision 114-113 on all three scorecards. Consequently Russian had the opportunity to an immediate rematch, which was fought on June 17.

Scheduled for 12 rounds light heavyweight championship ended prior the final bell. Ward earned the second victory against Kovalev, this time by TKO at 2 minutes 29 seconds of the eighth round.

The highlight has seen American landing a straight right hand. He finished the job with several body shots. As a result Ward retained the unified light heavyweight championship. Kovalev reportedly claims the low blows that led to an early stoppage of the fight.

Also on the main card Guillermo Rigondeau defeated Moses Flores via the first-round knockout. Dmitry Bivol stopped Cedric Agnew in Round 4 as well as Luis Arias TKO’d Arif Magomedov in the fifth.
