Robert Whittaker becomes the first Australian and first New Zealand born fighter to win a UFC title.

An eleven-fight bill at UFC 213 was held on Saturday July 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event took place during the annual UFC Fight Week.

The UFC women’s bantamweight title fight between the champion Amanda Nunes and the challenger Valentina Shevchenko was expected to headline the event. The bout was cancelled due to defending champion being hospitalized for an undisclosed illness both Friday and Saturday morning; where she was cleared to fight by a doctor.

“She was medically cleared to fight, was checked and everything was fine,” UFC President Dana White told ESPN. “But she said she didn’t feel right.”

As a result, the UFC middleweight interim title fight between Yoel Romero (12-1) and Robert Whittaker (18-4) went ahead as the main event. After five rounds of action Whittaker earned a unanimous decision. Furthermore he became the first Australian and first New Zealand born fighter to hold a UFC title. Whittaker will be facing off the current champion in the division Michael Bisping in the championship unification bout at a later date.

In addition it was announced that UFC returns to Australia. The event is scheduled for November 19 at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
