UFC 214: Woodley defends welterweight belt, Cyborg becomes featherweight champion

MMA promotion UFC 214 was held on Saturday July 29 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The five-fight main card aired on Pay-Per-View following the preliminary programs on FXX and UFC Fight Pass. Three championship belts were contested on the night.

In the main event the defending light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier faced off Jon Jones. The latter is a former title holder, who had also earned a unanimous decision in their first bout in 2015. The second contest ended in favor of Jones who claimed the third-round knockout victory with head kick and punches. As a result he regained the title as well as stated the second win over Cormier.

In the post-fight interview inside the Octagon Jones called out Brock Lesnar. “Brock Lesnar, if you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in the octagon,” he said.

The co-main event was a welterweight title fight between the reigning champion Tyron Woodley and the challenger Demian Maia. Woodley scored a unanimous decision consequently defending the belt.

In the third championship bout Cristiane Justino faced off Tony Evinger. The challenge was for a vacant women’s featherweight title. Cris Cyborg earned the belt via the third-round stoppage with knees.

Also on the main card Robbie Lawler scored a unanimous decision against Donald Cerrone. As well Jimi Manuwa defeated Volkan Oezdemir by KO with punches in the first round.
