Steve Smoger narrates of his conversation with Marvelous Marvin Hagler at the 2017 International Boxing Hall of Fame induction weekend

The Hall of Fame resume of Steve Smoger consists of five inductions. In 2015 he received the highest honor in the sport of pro boxing when he was inducted into the IBHOF. He holds the distinction of officiating in more states and countries than any other boxing referee in the history of the sport. In addition, in August “Double S” became a co-chair at IBA Officials Committee.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler is an inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame. With twelve title defenses he reigned as the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987. He has also held the highest knockout percentage of all undisputed middleweight champions, at 78%.

“In June 2017, I attended the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) induction weekend. As an inductee (Class of 2015), I’m invited to attend ever year,” Smoger told FIGHTMAG. “At the opening ceremony dinner, I had the distinct privilege of dining with none other than Marvelous Marvin Hagler.”

“He said to me ‘you know, you are my favorite boxing referee”. I said ‘hearing that from you is very special and meaningful to me”.

“He said ‘you know, I live in Italy and I would see you at least once a month for several years on Eurosport officiating the Bigger’s Better Boxing Series. I also saw you referee several IBA title fights throughout Europe. I especially enjoyed that cruiserweight kid from Latvia! [Mairis Briedis]'”

I said “thank you Marvelous Marvin, you made my night.’ He said “no problem, we’re both Jersey Boys”.

Indeed, Marvelous Marvin is originally from Newark, New Jersey, USA. Born in Norfolk, VA, Steve Smoger resides in Atlantic City, NJ. In May he became the first professional boxing referee to be inducted into the newly created Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame, joining Don King and Michael Spinks among other inductees.

In conclusion Steve Smoger said that he truly believes that his conversation with the “Marvelous One” highlights his excellent experience working with the BB Team and the IBA in many venues around Europe for several great years.
