Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Madison Square Garden iwith UFC 217: Bisping vs. St-Pierre on November 4.
UFC 217 is the second promotion the organization hosts at famed Madison Square Garden in New York. It follows UFC 2015: Alvarez vs. McGregor held last year. The program includes three championship defenses featuring some of the biggest names in MMA.
A five-round middleweight championship headlines the show. The reigning champion out of England Michael Bisping (31-7-0) faces MMA great out of Canada Georges St-Pierre (25-2-0). The latter is a former two-tie welterweight title holder who makes his anticipated comeback to the fighting circuits.
The Bisping vs St-Pierre bout has been originally announced earlier this year but fell off. However during the UFC 214 post-fight press conference UFC President Dana White revealed that the match is back on.
Bantamweight championship between the current champion Cody Garbrandt (11-0-0) and his American-fellow T.J. Dillashaw (15-3-0) tops up the program. Garbrandt won the title against Dominick Cruz via decision last December at UFC 207 in Las Vegas. Ranked No.2 Dillashaw is a former champion in the division who won the title against Renan Barao in 2014, and made two defenses against Joe Soto and the latter, but then lost a decision against Dominick Cruz.
The Garbrandt vs Dillashow bout was previously expected to serve as the main event for UFC 213. The fight fell off when the champion had to withdraw due to a back injury.
In addition Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk (14-0) takes on ranked No.3 American Rose Namajunas (6-3) in defense of women’s strawweight belt. Jedrzejczyk will be making her sixth title defense. Namajunas is a former contender for the belt who is coming out of the victory against Michelle Waterson.
