UFC 221 fight card in the making
UFC 221 takes place at Perth Arena on Sunday February 11. The event is a debut of Ultimate Fighting Championship in Western Australia, following the lift of the 2013 cage ban in the State. The fight card is promised to feature “the best local and international mixed martial artists”.
No match ups have been formally announced to date by the promotion. However according to thewest.com.au two bouts have been booked so far.
The expected lineup includes a flyweight contest between the representative of the country-host Ben Nguyen (17-6 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and Brazilian Jussier Formiga (20-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC). Also on the card Australian light heavyweight Tyson Pedro (6-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) takes on Saparbek Safarov (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) of Russia.
The middleweight championship unification between the champion Georges St-Pierre and the interim title holder Robert Whittaker is reportedly targeted for the event. Canadian MMA great St-Pierre won the belt earlier this month at Madison Square Garden in New York, where he defeated former champion Michael Bisping of England. According to GSP’s contract Australian pride Whittaker, who defeated Cuban Yoel Romero, winning the interim belt in July, is his next opponent. More information is expected to be revealed in the near future.
