Georges St-Pierre vacates UFC middleweight title
UFC 221 takes place at Perth Arena on Sunday February 11. The Pay-Per-View event is a historic happening that marks the debut of Ultimate Fighting Championship in Western Australia.
On Friday the promotion has formally announced the main event bout of the upcoming show, featuring Robert Whittaker up against Luke Rockhold. The day earlier the match up has been reported as a targeted headliner for UFC 221.
“The undisputed UFC middleweight championship will be on the line in Australia on Feb. 11, when Robert Whittaker defends his crown for the first time against former titleholder Luke Rockhold in the main event of UFC 221,” stated in the press release.
Middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre has vacated his world title. As a result, “interim champion Whitaker has been elevated to undisputed champion”.
“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health,” Georges St-Pierre informed the organization. “Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.”
According to reports, “The Super Samoan” Mark Hunt will most likely battle out at UFC 221. Other bouts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The current fight card can be found below.
