Cyborg says she fights Anderson at UFC 221, latter denies

Cris Cyborg vs. Megan Anderson

Cris Cyborg up against Megan Anderson is arguably the most anticipated women’s MMA bout expected in 2018. The pair was originally scheduled to fight last July at UFC 214 in Anaheim, but the bout fell off when the latter pulled out due to personal issues.

On New Year’s Eve Cris Cyborg defended her UFC featherweight title, scoring a unanimous decision against Holly Holm. In the post-fight interview inside the Octagon she said she “would like to fight somebody at 145, maybe Megan Anderson”. In addition she said she “would like to fight in Australia”.

Cyborg has recently posted an image on her Instagram, advising that she was proposed to fight Anderson. The image made in UFC 221 style shows the photos of her and Anderson, as well as the “World Featherweight Championship” outline underneath the names of the fighters.

“I got a call asking if I WOULD fight @megana_mma [Megan Anderson] in her home country and I said Yes!” she wrote in the caption.

A few hours later, Anderson responded with a screenshot of Cyborg’s post featured in a story of her Instagram. She has also added the “fake news” hashtag on the top of the image.

In addition, Anderson made a post advising that the fight would “not been happening in 6 weeks”. However she also stated that “this is the only fight that needs to happens and it will happen, soon”.

“I didn’t realise you can accept a fight that’s never been offered to you.. Cris nor her team have been offered a fight against me at UFC Perth by the UFC despite the rumours,” wrote the former Invicta FC featherweight titleholder Anderson. “The UFC are looking to book this fight, but since the UFC Perth card is already completely booked, it will not be happening in 6 weeks.”

“They can say whatever, can try make me look whatever they like, try and say someone else deserves this fight, but one thing is certain: this is the only fight that needs to happens and it will happen, soon…”

To the moment, the formal comment by the promotion, regarding the Cyborg vs. Anderson fight at UFC 221 has not been made.

UFC 221 takes place at Perth Arena on Sunday February 11. The main event features the defending middleweight champion Robert Whittaker up against the former champion Luke Rockhold. The current lineup can be found here.
