Manny Pacquiao next fight possible at Jeff Horn vs Terence Crawford card in New York
Australian World Champion Jeff Horn defends his WBO welterweight title against American Terence Crawford on April 15 (April 14 in the US). The bout promoted by Top Rank takes place at the historic fight venue Madison Square Garden in New York.
Horn vs. Crawford was initially targeted for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on April 21. However the venue reportedly decided to keep the date open for NHL playoffs scheduled to begin on April 11. As a result ESPN-televised card is moved to New York a week earlier.
“We weren’t able to get anything in Vegas,” Top Rank’s Bob Arum told Las Vegas Review-Journal. “For sure it’s not going to be in Vegas. It’s nobody’s fault. I don’t want to place blame. We’re happy to be in New York. It wasn’t a question of a bidding war or anything like that. If I can’t get a building, I can’t get a building.”
Jeff Horn is the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion, who made his first successful title defense last December in Brisbane, when he stopped English Gary Corcorcan in the eleventh round. He initially earned the belt last July also in Brisbane, scoring a unanimous decision against the former champion Filipino Manny Pacquiao. The bout against Crawford will be Horn’s first professional challenge outside Oceania. Nevertheless he has traveled the world extensively as an amateur.
Terence Crawford has unified all four junior welterweight belts (WBC, WBO, WBA, IBF) last August in Lincoln, where he knocked out Julius Indongo of Namibia in the third round. Moving up a weight class he is a mandatory challenger for Horn’s WBO Welterweight strap.
In addition, boxing great Manny Pacquiao is possibly back in the ring, battling out on the same card. According to Arum the confirmation is expected in the coming days.
