“The All-American” Chris Weidman at UFC Gym Balcatta
Chris Weidman (14-3-0) touches Down Under on Friday February 9. “The All-American” comes to Perth two days ahead of the first Pay-Per-View event Ultimate Fighting Championship to be produced in Western Australia on February 11, when Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold battle out for the middleweight interim title in the headliner of UFC 221.
Currently ranked No. 4 in the division, Weidman will host a seminar at the new UFC facility, opening in Balcatta, WA. In addition, the event starting at 2:30 pm next Friday, includes a meet-n-greet which is open to the public.
Weidman captured the middleweight title in 2013 when he knocked out Anderson Silva in the second round. He then made three successful title defenses against the latter, Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort.
In December 2015 Rockhold, the main event fighter of the upcoming UFC 221 in Perth, became a new middleweight champion, when he TKO’d Weidman in the fourth round, who then fought Romero and Gegard Mousasi. Although also facing defeat in those bouts, “The All-American” returned on the winning patch last July, when he submitted Kelvin Gastelum in the third round.
Since then Weidman has been sidelined with a thumb injury which required surgery. When he returns there are three fighters on the list the former champion could potentially take on, including the rematch bouts against Rockhold and Romero, as well as the challenge against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. He is also “very confident” to “get back to that title shot soon and get that belt”.
The reigning UFC middleweight champion is New Zealand born representative of Australia Robert Whittaker. The list of other former notable title-holders in the division, including Weidman, features Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Michael Bisping.
