Steve Smoger: Refereeing Is Boxing Without The Pain

Hall of fame boxing referee Steve Smoger appears on episode 116 of The FightBox Podcast.

Steve Smoger is a veteran boxing referee. He is one of only a handful of referees to ever be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (class of 2015). He has refereed nearly 1000 professional fights in his thirty-plus year career in countless countries around the world with the sport’s biggest names such as Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Gennady Golovkin, Bernard Hopkins and many more.

In this episode of The FightBox Podcast, Mr Smoger discusses his thoughts on the current state of professional boxing. He mentions what fights he thinks will be will be the biggest in 2017. This includes his thoughts on the much talked about Floyd Mayweather – Conor McGregor fight that is rumored to be happening this summer. Of this fight Smoger states “I think Floyd would really take him apart”.

He also gives his opinion on what role television has played in the popularity of boxing over the years. As well what affect the internet now has on the sport. Hall of fame referee Smoger also gives a very detailed account of what he has excelled at most, being the “third man in the ring”.

“Safety first, but careers matter,” Steve Smoger.

This seems to be his theory on when a fight should be stopped, something that has garnered him a lot of respect from both fans and fighters alike. However, “Double S” has not been without his critics. Some pundits have rebuked him for being “too touchy-feely” inside the squared circle. Smoger’s very classy and candid remarks regarding this included him saying “[when] they get an International Boxing Hall of Fame ring, let them knock”.
