Throwback Muay Thai: Alex James vs Gaz Rees

Domination 8 Muaythai: Alex James challenges Gaz Rees for the WMC Australian crusierweight title

The Australian championship belt in the cruiserweight class was contested five years ago in Perth, WA. The current title holder at that time Gaz Rees of the ACT traveled across the country to defend the belt against the West Australian contender Alex James.

The Rees vs James title clash was a co-headline event at the Domination 8 Muaythai promotion. The event was held on March 3, 2012 at Cockburn Basketball Stadium in Hamilton Hill, WA. In the main event Toby “The Weapon” Smith of Australia battled out against Nonsai Sor Sanyakorn of Thailand in a non-title international bout.

The championship encounter between Gas Rees and Alex James went on distance. It has seen as much or as a little, but an all-round heavy striking out of the arsenal of the Art of Eight Limbs. After five rounds of action the unanimous judges decision proclaimed the local athlete as the winner. As a result, James became a new WMC cruiserweight champion of Australia.

In the main bout of the evening Toby Smith defeated Nonsai Sor Sanyakorn by decision. The other bouts featured Matt King victorious against Liam Krywn by TKO in Round 2. Also, Danial “Mini T” Williams earned a decision against Ben Brown. The fight card also comprised Roy Wills and Millad Farzad, among others.  In addition, the program included the junior exhibition match between Nick King and Josh Gonzalvo. The promoters of the event were Darren Curovic and Blair Smith.
