Throwback: Hall of Fame referee Steve Smoger makes kickboxing debut

International Boxing Hall of Fame referee Steve Smoger officiates Girl Power Kickboxing.

The date of Friday, November 14, 2014 went in history as the first time when a famed boxing referee out of the United States Steve Smoger stepped inside the ring to officiate the bouts in kickboxing. After obtaining a required training “Double S” was appointed by the WKN as one of its officials. As a result he appeared at the debut of Girl Power series held in Latvia live on Pay-Per-View.

At that time, comprising the Bigger’s Better team already for three years, Smoger has worked shoulder to shoulder with Klaus Hagemann. The latter is a long-time kickboxing official, representing the World Kickboxing Network in Germany.

The very first kickboxing bout that Steve Smoger has refereed was a quarter-final at the women’s knockout tournament Girl Power 1 Liepaja. A three-round featherweight battle featured Pernille Schjonning of Denmark up against Anna Tatjana Lie of Norway. The latter, eventual winner of the event, claimed the victory via a unanimous decision.

This past weekend Steve Smoger has spent in Canastota, New York attending the IBHOF induction class of 2017. The event has followed his journey to South American Uruguay as well as Bermuda last month.

Next week American referee Smoger returns to Europe. He appears at Girl Power 3 Sunny Beach held on Friday June 23 live on SFR Sport 5. The show follows a previous series in February where “Double S” made his second appearance as the official in kickboxing.
