Georges St-Pierre faces off the winner of Woodley vs Maia UFC 214 welterweight title fight.
UFC 214 is held at Honda Center in Anaheim on July 29. The main card airs on Pay-Per-View following the preliminary program on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The light heavyweight championship between a current title holder Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones headlines the event. The latter is a former champion in the division who has also scored a victory in their encounter in 2015.
Earlier this week the organization announced a women’s featherweight title clash between Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino and Tonya Evinger, battling out for a vacant belt. “Triple Threat” is a replacement for a previously lined up Megan Anderson, who has withdrew due to personal matters.
On Thursday it was revealed that the third title challenge is featured on the card. The current champion in welterweight class Tyron Woodley (17-3-1) of the US puts the belt on the line, squaring off against Brazilian Demian Maia (25-6-0 MMA).
Woodley won the belt against Robbie Lawler, claiming the victory via the first-round knockout last year. He then twice faced off Stephen Thompson, going in a majority draw as well as taking a majority decision, consequently retaining the title.
Maia is ranked No 5 in the division. He is riding a seven-fighting winning streak with the most recent contest ending in a split decision victory against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 in May.
The winner of Woodley vs Maia championship bout goes up against the legendary Georges St-Pierre at a later date.
“Georges and I talked a couple days ago when he was in Vegas,” UFC President Dana White told MMA Junkie in an exclusive interview at UFC headquarters. “Georges is saying he wants to fight. We’ll get this thing figured out.”
“We’re talking about Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. These two are going to fight soon. That will free up the 170-pound champion for Georges St-Pierre to return and try to regain his belt.”
