Two championship bouts headline UFC 217
UFC 217 is held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 4. Two championship bouts are expected to headline the Pay-Per-View program.
A five-round middleweight contest is set between the current champion out of England Michael Bisping (30-7) and the MMA legend out out of Canada Georges St-Pierre (25-2). The bout has been originally announced earlier this year but fell off. However during the UFC 214 post-fight press conference UFC President Dana White revealed that the match is back on. The date and place of the bout have been initially mentioned by MMA Fighting. On Wednesday the reigning champion made a statement on “UFC Tonight”.
“I’ve got a chirpy little Englishman who’s going to fight Georges St-Pierre, Madison Square Garden, November 4,” said Bisping. “It is official. Put it in your diaries. Do not miss it. We’re taking over.”
The winner of the Bisping vs GSP bout is expected to face an interim champion Robert Whittaker at a later date, unifying the belts. The latter is currently out due to knee injury.
According to MMA Today Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk faces American Rose Namajunas in defense of the UFC women’s strawweight title. With the 14-0 MMA record a former Muay Thai champion Jedrzejczyk will be making her sixth title defense. Ranked No.3 Namajunas (6-3) is a former contender for the belt, who is victorious in her most recent bout against Michelle Waterson in April.
