Jeff Horn vs Jessie Vargas to be confirmed
Australian Jeff Horn was expected to face Filipino Manny Pacquiao one more time on November 12 in Brisbane. The second contest was meant to be a rematch following their encounter at Suncorp Stadiu in July, when the representative of the country-host caused a major upset as well as became a new World Boxing Organization welterweight champion.
However an anticipated rematch was cancelled when Pacquiao was forced to pull out due to his duties as a Senator of Philippines. As a result the current WBO champion Horn was left with no opponent.
Several names appeared as a potential replacement including Anthony Mundine. However 7 News reports that the bout against a former two-division World Champion American Jessie Vargas (27-2-0, 10 KOs) is in formal negotiations. The latter also appears as the most preferable opponent or Horn.
“I feel like I’ve got the moves to take Jessie down. He’s a former world champion so he’ll definitely be a hard fight,” said Horn.
Vargas has held the WBA and IBO super lightweight titles in 2014, and the WBO welterweight title in 2016. His most recent bout was against Manny Pacquiao last November in Las Vegas, where the boxing great out of Philippines, champion at that time, scored a unanimous decision, defending the belt.
The Jeff Horn vs Jessie Vargas fight is expected to be confirmed in the coming days. If successful, the bout shall be taking its place at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
