GGG vs Canelo
Gennady Golovkin faces Saul Alvarez in a 12-round championship of the World held on Saturday September 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In follow up to the Mayweather vs McGregor showdown, the the “GGG vs Canelo” bout is proclaimed as a “real fight”.
The 37-fight undefeated Kazakhstan’s “GGG” Golovkin claimed 33 wins by way of knockout. His resume includes the victories against American Daniel Jacobs, British Kell Brook, Canadian David Lemieux, among others. Facing off Alvarez, he puts his three belts on the line: World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF).
‘Canelo’ Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) with his only defeat came from “Money” Mayweather in 2013. Over the course of his career he is victorious against his Mexican-fellow Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, American Shane Mosley, among others.
At the official weigh-in ceremony conducted on Friday at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Golovkin stepped on the scales first showing the middleweight limit at 160 pounds (72.5 kg). Alvarez showed the same, 160.
The Golovkin vs Alvarez undercard comprises six bouts. Joseph Diaz Jnr takes on Jorge Lara at featherweight. Ryan Martin goes up against Francisco Rojo at lightweight. Junior bantamweight Nicola Adams meets Alexandra Vlajk in the evening’s opponent bout. A complete fight card can be found below.
