UFC 223: Ferguson meets Khabib in undisputed lightweight title fight

UFC 223: Namajunas faces Joanna in strawweight championship rematch

UFC 223 is held in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday April 8. The main event is an undisputed lightweight championship between the interim champion Tony Ferguson and the challenger Khabib Nurmagomedov. The announcement has been made on Saturday January 20 at the TD Garden in Boston, MA, where UFC President Dana White stated that “the winner of this fight will be the champ. It’s an undisputed title fight.”

Ferguson was initially expected to defend his interim belt against Nurmagomedov. The current lightweight champion is Conor McGregor. At this moment it is unclear if the announced undisputed title fight means that “The Notorious” has been already stripped of his title or not.

The co-main event at UFC 223 features the reigning strawweight champion Rose Namajunas who defends her title against the former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. “The Thug” claimed the belt last November at UFC 217 when she knocked out Polish star in the first round.

The press conference also featured the UFC 222 main event fighters. The event is headlined by Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar who square the differences on March 4 in Las Vegas.

Holloway is the defending featherweight champion, while Edgar, the former lightweight titleholder, twice challenged for the belt. The pair was originally scheduled for UFC 218, but the bout fell off when the latter pulled out due to injury.
