UFC 226: Champion vs. Champion
UFC 226 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8 (July 7 in the US). The event is held during the annual International Fight Week with a super fight between two champions, Stipe Miocic (18-2) and Daniel Cormier (20-1), on the top of the bill.
The bout has been formally announced late last week, featuring the reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who moves up a weight class, going up against the defending heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. If successful “DC” will join Conor McGregor, by becoming the second fighter in history, who has held two UFC titles in two different weight classes simultaneously; as well as the fifth overall to win title in different divisions (with McGregor, Randy Couture, BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre). “The Notorious” won lightweight title at UFC 205 when he was the reigning featherweight champion.
Facing off Cormier, Miocic will be seeking his fourth consecutive heavyweight title defense, following his most recent victory against Francis Ngannou at UFC 220 earlier this month. On the same night Cormier successfully defended his light heavyweight belt, scoring the second-round TKO win against Volkan Oezdemir.
The Miocic vs. Cormier heavyweight championship is the third time in history that champions in different divisions will fight for the same title, following UFC 94 and UFC 205. Moreover, it is the first time at heavyweight – a title which also carries bragging rights as the “Baddest Man on the Planet”. In addition, Miocic and Cormier have been announced to serve as the head coaches of The Ultimate Fighter 27.
