UFC 223: Joanna Jedrzejczyk talks Fighting Spirit, transition to MMA from Muay Thai

UFC 223: Rose Namajunas vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk 2

The former strawweight titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk aspires to regain the title when she faces the defending champion Rose Namajunas. The contest is a co-main event bout at the upcoming UFC 223 Pay-Per-View event held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 8 (April 7 in the US).

Following the UFC 223 Ferguson vs Khabib preview by Joe Rogan and Jimmy Smith, a new video hit stream on Saturday. The clip shows Jedrzejczyk disusing her fighting spirit ahead of the rematch with Namajunas.

“Fighting Spirit means to not give up,” said Jedrzejczyk. “It’s extra energy which is inside us. Not in our heads or in our bodies, but in our souls. I definitely feel like I have this fighting spirit.”

As an example she spoke her second fight with Claudia Gadelha.

“I was believing in myself that I was gonna win that fight, even I lost first two rounds. And I think that this fighting spirit helped me to win that fight.”

When asked about how much of her UFC success was the result of her fighting spirit, Joanna Jedrzejczyk reflected back on her career in Muay Thai, talking her transition to MMA. Her resume includes the battles against Ekaterina Vandaryeva, Alla Ivashkevich, among others. In addition, in 2010 she earned WKN World bantamweight title at Big-8 WGP in Belarus.

“I used to compete in Muay Thai for ten years. I did almost hundred fights.”

“But I remember the transition, and how mad I was getting mad with every Jiu-Jitsu, grappling or wrestling training. I was saying that ‘I was never gonna learn this’. But it was all about the fighting spirit.”

In addition Jedrzejczyk outlined that fighting spirit is fundamental in order to “be one of the greatest fighters in the world, to become UFC champion”. “You must have the fighting spirit to be someone special,” she concluded.
