The long anticipated return of the self proclaimed “face of the fight game” Conor McGregor Sr was dealt fresh speculation over the weekend. The Notorious one was invited to attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final in Moscow as a guest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
McGregor was in the stands as France swept aside Croatia to win a historic World Cup in the Russian capital. But he wasn’t the only MMA phenom in attendance.
Also enjoying the spectacle was the current holder of McGregor’s old UFC Lightweight Championship, Khabib Nurmagomedov. There is no love lost between the pair, with the undefeated Nurmagomedov the target of the infamous “dolly throw” of McGregor back in April after he was deemed to have bullied the Irishman’s SBG team mate Artem Lobov.
One hopes that they were enjoying the game from opposite ends of the stadium.
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor
A fight between the pair would arguably be the biggest in UFC history, and has been building momentum slowly for many years. With McGregor seemingly needing a huge challenge as well as a huge payday to lure him back to the octagon from the comfort of his millionaire lifestyle, the Khabib test ticks all the boxes that the rematch with Diaz, or matchup with Tony Ferguson does not.
Firstly, Nurmagomedov is undefeated, and indeed has looked unbeatable of late. Back to back maulings of Edson Barboza and Al Iaquinta have showcased his dominant style superbly. And if he has shown any weakness, it has been his lack of head movement which could be taken advantage of by a supremely precise knock out artist.
Enter Mr. McGregor.
“Dollygate” and the pair’s joint appearance in Russia has simply fanned the flames of anticipation of this record breaking bout. The very possibility of McGregor entering the lions den and looking to regain his belt whilst handing Khabib his first ever loss in Russia is looking more likely than ever, and has both the UFC and MMA fans around the globe truly licking their lips in expectation.
