WKN President Stephane Cabrera previews K1L MMA

Kumite 1 League is a new MMA promotion which makes its debut on September 29 at the NSCI Dome in Worli, Mumbai. The event made international headlines earlier this week with the appearance of Mike Tyson, who is expected to attend the inaugural event as a special guest.

The event is a live scoring MMA competition, which is contested by teams representing their countries. The matchmaking of three contests featured on the card is presented in collaboration between World Kickboxing Network and Somesh Kamra, CEO of K1L.

“Somesh Kamra is a key player in the development of combat sports in India,” WKN President Stephane Cabrera told FIGHTMAG on Thursday. “I had the chance to invite and meet him four years ago at the debut of Girl Power in Latvia.┬áIt was the first time when the Indian kickboxer competed in Europe.”

“Our working relationship has developed into a sincere and effective collaboration and friendship.”

“We have worked on promoting the Indian athletes internationally. Especially in Japan in recent years.”

As an example Cabrera outlined featherweight Bharat Kandare (5-3), who is the first Indian native to compete in Japan, appearing at the Ganryujima events. Furthermore, coached by Kamra at Superhuman Gym, he is the first representative of India signed with UFC, making his debut at Fight Night Shanghai last November.

Talking an upcoming Kumite 1 League event, Cabrera said it was honor to match-make some of the bouts and be a part of it.

“I personally believe that this can be another revolution in combat sports. India, with more than one billion people, can become a major player on the world stage.”

“I thank Mr Kamra for inviting us to be a part of this great new adventure”.

A complete K1L fight card is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
