Muay Thai World Championship returns to Thailand

IFMA Muay Thai World Championships 2019

Muay Thai World Championships 2019 is held in Bangkok from July 18 to July 28, marking a return of competition to Thailand since 2015. Last year IFMA Worlds took place in Mexico, following the events in Belarus and Sweden held in 2017 and 2016 (respectively).

IFMA Worlds 2019 was originally announced for mid June in Dagestan, Russia. This week International Federation of Muaythai Amateur named the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand as a city-host of the major Muay Thai event of the next year.

“Coming Home was Thailand’s motto when they bid for the World Muaythai Championships 2019. They have now been given this honour, making this the first senior level muaythai event to be held in Bangkok since 2015,” reads the announcement.

Dr Sakchye Tapsuwan, President of AMAT (Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand) said he was delighted to bring elite-level athletes to Bangkok after so many years. The Royal World Cup was the most recent senior event, but of course Bangkok has hosted three hugely successful Youth World Championships in the meantime.

In addition, an upcoming World Muay Thai Championships is the second qualifier for The World Games 2021 in Birmingham, USA. IFMA Worlds 2019 follows The Arafura Games 2019 scheduled from April 26 to May 4 in Darwin, Australia.
