American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0) still appears to be the most desirable opponent out there to date. His previous bout against another boxer was in September 2015 when he took a unanimous decision against Andre Berto. Before that he defeated Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Shane Mosley, among all other big names of professional boxing who he has faced inside the ring.
It all started with UFC star Conor McGregor who challenged “Money” Mayweather and met him inside the square circle in August 2017. The latter, as he was saying at the time when the bout was in the making, came out of retirement only to fight “The Notorious”.
The way it ended is now history. Another historical fact is that Mayweather-McGregor was the second-biggest pay-per-view event of all-time (4.3 million PPV buys in the US), following Mayweather-Pacquiao from 2015, which did 4.6. Winning over McGregor, Mayweather declared a 50-fight undefeated record and returned to retirement.
Jeff Horn called Mayweather out straight after his victory over Manny Pacquiao in July 2017, which was several weeks before the May-Mac battle. Horn then fought twice. In his previous outing he was stopped by Terence Crawford in Round 9. This Friday (Nov. 30) “The Hornet” faces his Australian-fellow Anthony Mundine in a bout which one can say generates zero interest on the big scene.
Manny Pacquiao called for the second fight against Mayweather this past July, if the latter wanted “to come back in boxing”. However, “Pacman” is scheduled for his next bout against Adrien Broner on January 20 (AEDT).
The news broke earlier this month when Floyd Mayweather was announced to fight Japanese mixed martial artist and kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa late December. However “Money” “never agreed to an official bout” in Japan (more here).
Floyd Mayweather vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
We also have UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who wants to box Floyd Mayweather in the ring, rather than face Tony Ferguson in the Octagon. “The Eagle” is fresh of the win against McGregor, who he has submitted in the fourth round of the bout dubbed as “biggest fight in UFC history”.
So it is quite understandable that next Khabib wants even a bigger fight for himself. In summary, to make the bout against Floyd happen, first of all he needs to receive “a green light” from UFC, as he is signed with the promotion.
If it goes ahead, there likely won’t be an official weight class, but a catchweight. And then there is a number of terms, “Money” Mayweather terms. He is an “A-side”, as he calls himself.
Floyd Mayweather next move: opinion
Everyone who calls Floyd Mayweather out certainly believes in himself as a fighter. It is also quite obvious it is about the prize-money.
The magnitude of the May-Mac tour has arguably made boxing great again, at least for several months. But the question is whether millions of people are ready to buy any of the following boxing matchups?
Mayweather vs. Horn
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2
Mayweather vs. Nasukawa
Mayweather vs. Nurmagomedov
And yet, if Floyd Mayweather returns to fight action once again, it will likely be a boxing bout. However, to make a real sensation consequently generating numbers, it arguably has to be something different.
This comes from the May-Mac experience, which has been never done before, featuring a super star from the world of MMA challenging the boxing great in his own game.
Something never-seen-before, will likely be if Floyd Mayweather appears inside the ring as a kickboxer or Muay Thai fighter or steps inside the MMA cage. It seems that at this stage, those who have recently called him out for a boxing showdown are not yet, or not anymore that “interesting” for the global audience the way it was with the former UFC two-division titleholder.
