IFMA Muay Thai: Australia
Muay Thai Asian Championships 2018 is held from 4 to 14 December in Macau. The event is considered to be the major regional competition with over thirty countries participating this year, including Australia. As a result it marks the first time when a team from the Oceania region is featured on the roster.
“Last year a historic MoU was signed between the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) for all sports to participate in Asian competitions. This is the first time the Oceania Muaythai Federation has been able to benefit from this arrangement,” International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) reported.
Team Australia is represented by the “former world bronze medalist Yolanda Schmidt, and also Lee Fook in the male division. Both athletes are well-known at IFMA tournaments, both at home and abroad,” reads the announcement.
Asian Muay Thai Championship is a single-elimination tournament (Olympic system tournament). The medals are contested in both, male and female classes, with the athletes battling it out in their respective weight divisions.
Team Australia is a regular participant of IFMA Muay Thai events including both senior and junior world championships. In addition, the country hosts The Arafura Games 2019 scheduled from April 26 to May 4 in Darwin, NT which launches Muay Thai qualifications for The World Games 2021.
