Ayaka Hamasaki takes Rizin women’s atomweight title

MMA event Rizin 14 was held this past Monday (Dec. 31, 2018) at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The fight card featured fourteen bouts with an exhibition boxing matchup between Floyd Mayweather and Tenshin Nasukawa on the top of the bill.

The main event was a no contest encounter. Yet, American boxing great “Money” Mayweather stopped Japanese kickboxer and mixed martial artist Nasukawa in the first round.

The co-main event featured the current Bellator MMA bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell up against Rizin Bantamweight Grand Prix winner Kyoji Horiguchi. The pair battled it out for the promotion’s inaugural bantamweight title.

The scheduled for five rounds championship bout ended prior the final bell. The representative of “The Land of the Rising Sun”, Horiguchi scored the win by submission in the third round, consequently taking the belt. Caldwell’s Bellator bantamweight title was not on the line.

Also on the card Kanna Asakura and Ayaka Hamasaki battled it out for Rizin women’s atomweight belt. The latter took the win by submission in the second, becoming a champion in the division.
