Face sunscreens for training outdoors in hot Australian summer

Best face sunscreens

One of the best things about summer is the ability to train outdoors. While I’ve been in Perth over the holiday period, I have loved getting out of the gym and running by the ocean. But since the ultraviolet rays in Australia can be quite harsh, it’s important to wear some sun protection. Face sunscreens, in particular, are a must for me.

Since the skin on your face is more delicate than the skin on your body, I use different sunscreens on my face and body. If you have sensitive skin or skin that is prone to breakouts, the average sunscreen made for body use may create problems for your face.

Thick and greasy sunscreens can feel heavy on your face, particularly once you start to sweat. Many brands also end up blocking your pores, leading to breakouts.

Over the years, I have tested a range of face sunscreens. In addition to preventing some forms of skin cancer, wearing SPF on your face every day can also help prevent the formation of fine lines, freckles and age spots. It is also essential if you’re using products that target pigmentation, as the active ingredients in those sorts of products make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Here is a list of my favourite face sunscreens:

1. Aspect Envirostat SPF 50

If I’m going to be outdoors in the sun for long periods of time, this is what I currently use on my face because it’s SPF 50 and non-greasy. You can buy it online for about $30.

2. La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF 50+

This is another lightweight face sunscreen that I often use, which does not clog my pores. You can buy it at some chemists or online for about $29.

3. Cosmedix Reflect Antioxidant Moisturising Spray SPF 15

I use this lightweight and moisturising sunscreen on my face every day without fail. It’s non-greasy and sits well under makeup if you have to wear it. You can buy it online for about $70. The 120ml bottle lasts a long time as you only need to use a small amount.

4. Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream SPF 25

If you want a multi-purpose product that provides makeup coverage and sun protection, I love this BB cream. It’s SPF 25 so not a bad option for every day use. You can buy it online for about $70. A little goes a long way with this product as well, so it lasts a while.

If you have spent too much time in the sun and your skin is feeling dehydrated, you could look into getting a HydraFacial to infuse some hydration back into your skin. I recently trialed the HydraFacial in Perth and was really happy with the results.
