Following the open training session on Wednesday, UFC 234 Media Day was held at Crown Towers in Melbourne, Australia this morning (Feb. 7). As the tradition goes, fighters scheduled to appear in the cage this coming Sunday faced off for the media. Some of the fighters took the face off seriously, and others had a laugh. But the overall vibe was friendly with mutual respect shown by all.

Most fighters dressed in collared shirts or athletic gear while taking their interviews. However, 25-year-old New Zealander Shane Young slipped into something more comfortable: a bath robe and slides.

UFC 234 Open workouts

In the afternoon, the show moved to Federation Square in Melbourne’s CBD for the Open Workouts. A free event for the public to attend, the crowds waited patiently in the sun for the exhibition to commence.

UFC lightweight Callan Potter opened the proceedings, followed by local UFC light heavyweight Jimmy Crute. Current No. 6 UFC middleweight Israel Adesanya was up next, executing a number of Muay Thai techniques. Popular with the spectators, he signed his shin guards after his display and threw them into the crowd. Kelvin Gastelum, No. 4 UFC middleweight and contender for the middleweight championship, followed with a display of sharp hands.

Then it was time for the crowd favourite, former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Involving a number of his training partners in his display, the love and gratitude he has for his team was clear. Current UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker concluded the event.

UFC 234 takes place at Rod Laver Arena this coming Sunday February 10. The MMA main event will see Whittaker defending his belt against Gastelum in the middleweight championship bout scheduled for five rounds.
