UFC 234 Whittaker vs. Gastelum: press conference

After the official Media Day and Open Workouts on Thursday, UFC 234 Press Conference was held today (Feb. 8) at The Palms at Crown in Melbourne, Australia.

The conference was attended by UFC President Dana White, main event fighters Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum, and co-main event fighters Israel Adesanya and Anderson Silva.

Robert Whittaker was asked about his views on middleweight championship contender Kelvin Gastelum. According to Whittaker, “Kelvin is too dangerous to look past… what ever will be, will be. Fighting is always 50/50… I’ll go in on Sunday and see what happens from there.”

When Gastelum’s prediction of a first round knock out was raised, Whittaker said “He might… He’s got a good punch on him… [but] I hit pretty hard myself.” Whittaker predicts that they will “throw hands”.

Anderson Silva spoke about his family’s concerns about him continuing fighting, asking him why he keeps doing it. Silva says that it’s his passion and his family understands this. Silva stated that “When I stop, I never come back”. So for now, retirement is not on the cards.

UFC 234 takes place at Rod Laver Arena this coming Sunday February 10. The MMA main event will see Whittaker defending his belt against Gastelum in the middleweight championship bout scheduled for five rounds.
