Rob Whittkaer not stripped of UFC middleweight title

Nigerian-born MMA sensation residing in New Zealand Israel Adesanya (16-0) faces American contender Kelvin Gastelum (15-3) on April 14 (AEDT). The pair battles it for an interim middleweight title at UFC 236, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

New Zealand-born Australian Robert Whittaker (20-4) remains the champion in the division. An interim championship bout was set, while he recovers from a recent injury.

Whittaker was expected to face Gastelum in defense of his title at UFC 234 held in Melbourne earlier this month (Feb. 10). The champion was forced to withdraw a few hours before the event due to a severe abdominal injury which required emergency surgery.

Meanwhile, Adesanya scored a unanimous decision against Brazilian MMA legend Anderson Silva. He made his debut inside the Octagon last February at UFC 221 in Perth.

The venue and location accommodating UFC 236 is yet to be announced. More information and other matchips are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
