The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Sweden on June 1 with UFC Fight Night on ESPN+. MMA event takes place at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm featuring a light heavyweight battle between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith serving as the headliner of the show. The matchup was initially announced by Brett Okamoto of ESPN with the confirmation made by the promotion(via Twitter)
Both, Gustafsson (18-5) and Smith (31-14) are the recent UFC Light Heavyweight title challengers. The Swede fighter challenged “Bones” last December at UFC 232 where he was stopped in the third round with punches. American “Lionheart” went up against the current champion earlier this month at UFC 235 where he was defeated by a unanimous decision.
Before that Alexander Gustafsson won two bouts in a row scoring the fifth-round knockout win against Glover Teixeira and a unanimous decision against Jan B?achowicz. According to MMAmania.com the latter was expected to face “The Viking” in the rematch at the upcoming show, but withdrew due to injury, with Smith taking his spot.
Prior taking on Jones, Anthony Smith defeated the likes of Volkan Oezdemir, Mauricio Rua and Rashad Evans. His resume also includes the wins against Hector Lombard, Andrew Sanchez, among others.
