MMA event Bellator 222 presented the 18-fight bill at the Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 15 (AEST). The six-fight main card on DAZN was headlined by the semi-final bout of welterweight World Grand Prix. The contest featured the defending champion Rory MacDonald up against Neiman Gracie.
The championship bout went the distance ending in a unanimous decision pronounced in favor of the champion. MacDonald earned his ticket to the final as well as updated his record to 21-5-1. Gracie suffered the first defeat in his professional MMA career and dropped to 9-1.
The co-main event featured Lyoto Machida faceoff Chael Sonnen at light heavyweight. The bout ended prior to the final bell with Machida taking the win by TKO early in the second round.
Also on the main card Darrion Caldwell faced Kyoji Horiguchi in defense of his Bellator Bantamweight title. The pair met for the second time following their encounter late December when the latter took the inaugural RIZIN FF Bantamweight belt by submission in the third round.
The second battle also ended in favor of Horiguchi, who came out victorious by a unanimous decision. As a result he became the champion in two organization.
