Joanna Jedrzejczyk returns to strawweight division taking on Michelle Waterson at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 161 scheduled for October 13 (AEST). Although the contest is yet to be signed it has been “verbally agreed” by both parties, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reported citing multiple sources. MMA event on ESPN+ is reportedly planned to take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA. The formal announcement of the venue is expected to be made by the promotion in the coming weeks.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk (15-3) is the former UFC women’s strawweight champion, who has reigned from March 2015 to November 2017. She lost the strap to Rose Namajunas at UFC 217.

In her previous bout last December Jedrzejczyk moved up a weight class challenging Valentina Shevchenko for a vacant (at that time) UFC women’s flyweight title. The latter earned the belt by a unanimous decision. Before that Jedrzejczyk scored a unanimous decision against Tecia Torres, which followed a pair of defeats against Namajunas.

Michelle Waterson (17-6) is riding a three-fight win streak. In her previous two outings she claimed a unanimous decision against Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Felice Herrig. Before that she took a split decision against Cortney Casey.

Waterson was last seen in action this past March. Her resume also includes the wins against Jessica Penne, Paige VanZant, among others. She is the former Invicta FC atomweight champion.

The next on organization’s schedule is UFC 239: Jones vs. Santos taking place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV on July 7 (AEST).

In addition, on October 6 the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Australia featuring Robert Whittaker up against Israel Adesanya. The contest in the middleweight championship unification between the current champion and the interim champion, which headlines UFC 243 held at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne, VIC.
