Lord of the Ring: Smith vs. Sone

The World Kickboxing Network announced its next visit to Northern Ireland scheduled for October 26. The event billed as “Lord of the Ring” takes place at Stormont Hotel in Belfast, following a previous show produced in June. Top of the fight-bill features local Johnny “Swift” Smith in defense of his WKN Intercontinental Welterweight title against Shuhei Sone of Japan.

“Swift” Smith (10-0, 6 KO) earned the belt mid last month against Lee Ji Hoon. Battling it out in front of his home crowd, the representative of the country-host stopped his South Korean opponent in the fourth round of their headline-bout at the “Back at the Clayton” event.

Over the course of his career Smith has competed in over fifteen countries, and, prior turning pro, scored the 17-4-2 record as an amateur. If successful in the upcoming outing, the Northern Ireland’s kickboxer will get an opportunity to contest for a prestigious WKN World title.

“Everything I’ve said about Johnny Smith, is ringing true,” said Billy Murray, coach of Smith and promoter of the Prokick event. “The World Kickboxing Network also said he is ready to challenge for a world title. But we have decided along with Stephane Cabrera [WKN President], that it would be best to have a defense of his new title first. The World Kickboxing Network have announced this match as a final eliminator to the world title.”

Japanese athlete Shuhei Sone (15-8-2, 5 KO) is familiar with competing on European soil. Last February the representative of The Land of the Rising Sun” challenged for ISKA World title (72.5 kg), yet lost by decision against Wilfried Martin. In addition he holds a combined 10-7 record in MMA.

The undercard of “Lord of the Ring” is scheduled see local and international competitors in a series of kickboxing bouts. The matchups are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The next on the organization’s calendar is WKN British Open scheduled for August 3 at Fraserburgh Leisure Centre in Fraserburgh, Scotland. The event follows the “Rise of Champions” event held in the city last weekend (July 20).
