Martin Nguyen stops Koyomi Matsushima in the second round

Martin Nguyen faced Koyomi Matsushima in defense of his featherweight title in the headliner of “ONE Dawn of Heroes” held last night (August 2) at the Mall of Asia in Manila, Philippines. The scheduled for five rounds championship bout didn’t go the distance. Vietnamese-Australian mixed martial artist stopped his Japanese opponent in the second round with strikes.

“Matsushima put the pressure on Nguyen early in the opening round with his solid ground game. The champion was able to make the necessary adjustments in the second round, however, as he picked apart a tired Matsushima with a barrage of strikes to get the stoppage win and successfully defend his title for a third time,” reads the event recap sent out by the promotion.

The victory over Matsushima is the following successful title defense in the record of Martin Nguyen. In his previous outing he retained his strap by knockout in the second round against former champion Narantungalag Jadambaa.

For Matsushima the defeat last night snapped his two-win streak. Previously he had scored unanimous decision against Kwon Won Il, and the first-round KO against Marat Gafurov, which marked his ONE Championship debut.

In the co-main event of “ONE Dawn of Heroes” Rodtang Jitmuangnon claimed flyweight Muay Thai title by unanimous decision against former champion Jonathan Haggerty. Also on the night Eddie Alvarez submitted Eduard Folayang in the first round to go through to the final of Lightweight World Grand Prix, and Demetrious Johnson and Danny Kingad defeated Tatsumitsu Wada and Reece McLaren (respectively) by decision in semi-finals of flyweight WGP.
