Rodtang Jitmuangnon new ONE Flyweight Muay Thai champion

Jonathan Haggerty of England faced Rodtang Jitmuangnon of Thailand in defense of ONE Flyweight Muay Thai title last night (August 2) at the Mall of Asia in Manila, Philippines. The pair battled it out in the co-headliner of the card billed as “Dawn of Heroes”. The championship bout went a full five-round distance. The verdict heard a unanimous decision in favor of the representative of the Kingdom of Thailand, who as a result became a new champion in the division.

“Haggerty utilized his length in the early going, using front kicks to keep the challenger at bay. Rodtang picked up steam in the succeeding rounds and managed to drop Haggerty twice. After five rounds of explosive action, it was Rodtang who walked away with the victory and the prestigious ONE World title,” reads the event recap sent out by the promotion.

Now former titleholder Haggerty won the title by unanimous decision against another former champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao in May. Yet, his reign lasted just over two months.

A new champion Rodtang earned his title shot after he stopped Sok Thy in the second round also in May.

In the main event of ONE Dawn of Heroes Martin Nguyen stopped Koyomi Matsushima in the second round to retain his featherweight title. Also on the night Eddie Alvarez defeated Eduard Folayang by submission in the first round to advance to the final of lightweight World Grand Prix.

In addition, Demetrious Johnson and Danny Kingad defeated Tatsumitsu Wada and Reece McLaren (respectively) by decision in the semi-final bouts of flyweight WGP.
