Askerov on Sana fight: Hard job, but I can do it

Dzhabar Askerov and Samy Sana face off in the semi-final bout of ONE Featherweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix. The contest is featured on the card billed as “Dreams of Gold” taking place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. The event is held on August 16.

Askerov earned his ticket to semi-final by unanimous decision against Enriko Kehl in May. Sana fought on the same show and similarly defeated one of the crowd favorites Yodsanklai Fairtex.

In a recent interview with the promotion Askerov revealed that he “was very surprised, like many others” that the famed Thai fighter was eliminated from the contest. Nevertheless, he added that “the fighting game is always full of surprises” and that he was ready to face either Yodsanklai or Sana in the semi-final.

In his next bout Dzhabar Askerov one more time takes on the opponent who is much taller than him. The Russian competitor is 1.70m tall, while the French athlete is 1.85m.

When asked whether such height difference concerns him, Askerov said that he had a plan to deal with it.

“He is tall, and that’s his big advantage, but I have developed a plan to counter that. My team and I watched his fights, and we will show it on fight day,” Askerov said.

“It’s not going to be the first time I have fought against a much taller opponent, because I am very short for my division anyway. Yes, it’s a hard job, but I can do it.”

The winner of Askerov vs. Sana bout is scheduled to face the winner of another semi-final featuring Giorgio Petrosyan up against Jo Nattawut. The ultimate victor of WGP gets $1,000,000 USD.

In the main event of “ONE: Dreams of Gold” Petchdam Petchyindee Academy defends his ONE Flyweight Kickboxing title against Ilias Ennahachi. Also on the card two-sport champion Stamp Fairtex faces Asha Roka in the women’s atomweight MMA battle.
