Gennady Golovkin takes IBF Middleweight title

Gennady Golovkin is a new IBF Middleweight champion. The Kazakh boxer faced Serhiy Derevianchenko of Ukraine on October 6 (AEST) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. The pair battled it out for a vacant belt, previously held by Canelo Alvarez. The event aired on DAZN.

The scheduled for twelve rounds championship went the distance. The verdict heard a unanimous decision in favor of “Triple G”.

Frank Lombardi scored it 114-113. Kevin Morgan and Eric Marlinski both had it 115-112.

Golovkin recorded the second win in a row, following the fourth-round KO of Steve Rolls scored in June. In addition, he updated his record to 40-1, 1 NC. Before that he suffered the first defeat in his professional boxing career, dropping a majority decision against Canelo in a rematch.

Derevianchenko suffered the second defeat in his career and dropped to 13-2. It was his second attempt to claim IBF middleweight belt.
