Buakaw Banchamek was offered to sign with ONE Championship and fight Giorgio Petrosyan
Buakaw Banchamek has been invited to join ONE Championship mid October. There haven’t been any response (available to public) from the famed Thai fighter to date. However such move is something that the fans would definitely like to see. Moreover “White Lotus” has been offered to square off against Italian kickboxing star Giorgio Petrosyan.
“Buakaw, if you’re there, I want to do Buakaw [Banchamek] vs. Giorgio Petrosyan as well. Buakaw, prove to the world that you’re number one,” said head of ONE Championship Chatri Sityodtong.
Buakaw and Petrosyan have previously met. Their first battle in May 2007 went five rounds distance and ended in draw.
First things first. To make a deal with a new organisation Buakaw has to be free from another group. He seems to be currently signed with China-based promotion “MAS Fight”, and/or managed by the people involved in it (as well as in Kunlun Fight).
Nevertheless this can certainly be arranged and figured out.
Giorgio Petrosyan hasn’t competed in Muay Thai for over 10 years. It is unlikely he himself would take a fight against Buakaw Banchamek, playing the game known as “The Art of Eight Limbs”.
This leaves it to oriental kickboxing, commonly known as K-1 style, thanks to Japanese promotion, which helped popularise the sport globally.
Buakaw Banchamek made his name by winning K-1 World MAX Grand Prix twice, when he beat Masato and Andy Souwer in the final of the tournament in 2004 and 2006 (respectively). Over the course of his K-1 run he has also defeated the A-list competitors of that era, including Albert Kraus, Nieky Holzken, Ole Laursen, Hiroki Shishido.
He is riding the seven-fight win streak in Muay Thai. Yet, one can say there was no much competition in those bouts in comparison to what Giorgio Petrosyan brings to the table.
The Petrosyan fight (if it happens) is likely to go ahead under kickboxing rules. This takes away Buakaw’s clinching and most importantly elbow-strikes.
So the question is whether he still feels comfortable competing on the highest level of kickboxing?
Buakaw was offered to prove he was the best. So he either takes the fight or not. Money doesn’t seem to a problem for ONE Championship, since the initiative comes from them.
