Weili Zhang is expected to defend her UFC strawweight title against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Strawweight champion Weili Zhang is scheduled for her first title defense against former queen in the division Joanna Jedrzejczyk. The contest is expected to be featured on the UFC 248 fight card, held on March 8 (AEST) at a yet to be determined location. The bout has been verbally agreed “with contracts expected to be issued at any time,” MMA Fighting reported citing multiple sources.
Riding the 20-fight win streak, newly-crowned champion Weili Zhang (20-1) is the first UFC titleholder from China and East Asia. She claimed the belt this past August in Shenzhen against former champion Jessica Andrade in 42 of the first round.
Before that Zhang scored a three-round unanimous decision against Tecia Torres and submitted Jessica Aguilar in Round 1. Earlier in her the Chinese competitor held Kunlun Fight strawweight title in MMA, as well as came second in the strawweight kickboxing championship tournament.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk (16-3) held UFC women’s strawweight title, including five successful defenses, from March 2015 until November 2017, when she was stopped by Rose Namajunas in the first round. In the immediate rematch next April she dropped a unanimous decision.
Jedrzejczyk rebounded with the win by unanimous decision against Torres in July 2018. In her following bout she challenged for a vacant belt in the lightweight class against Valentina Shevchenko, who came out victorious on all of the scorecards.
In her previous bout this past October Jedrzejczyk defeated Michelle Waterson by unanimous decision. Going up against Zhang she makes her second attempt to regain the strawweight title.
Prior switching to MMA, Jedrzejczyk has become eight-time IFMA Muay Thai World champion as well as held World Kickboxing Network (WKN) women’s bantamweight title.
The Zhang vs. Jedrzejczyk bout has not yet been officially announced by the UFC.
