Dana White confirmed both highly anticipated showdowns featuring Conor McGregor in his return against Donald Cerrone, and Khabib Nurmagomedov in defense of his lightweight title against Tony Ferguson. In addition, UFC President said that if “The Notorious and “The Eagle” are successful in their respective bouts they might be facing one another in the rematch “pretty soon”.
Conor McGregor (21-4) is expected to step inside the Octagon on January 19 (AEST) at T-Mobile Arena. His opponent in a non-title welterweight bout, which headlines UFC 246 fight card, is Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (36-13, 1 NC).
Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) is scheduled to make the third defense of his lightweight title against Tony Ferguson (25-3). The contest is expected to headline the upcoming UFC 249 fight card held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 19 (AEST).
“Fight’s done. That fight’s done, it’s happening,” White confirmed the fifth booking of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson.
Former two-division champion (featherweight and lightweight) Conor McGregor and the reigning lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov squared off in October 2018. The latter retained his title by submission in the fourth round.
“If Conor can get through Cowboy, and if Khabib can get through Tony, then we’d be looking at a rematch with Conor and Khabib down the line pretty soon,” White said.
Earlier this month it was reported that Conor McGregor was looking for three fights in 2020. In addition to Khabib Nurmagomedov the list of possible opponents includes the “BMF” titleholder Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.
